Watching this compilation of 12 videos and performances from the past 15 years, it's easy to forget that this is the same Eric Clapton who once quit the legendary Yardbirds because they were becoming "too pop." Still, there's always a touch of the blues in Clapton's music, even in a piece of pure fluff like "Blue Eyes Blue." And when a great Clapton song and performance are matched to arresting visuals, the result can be magical. Cases in point: "Motherless Child," a traditional acoustic blues shot in beautiful, sepia-toned black and white; "Change the World," Clapton's brilliant, Grammy-winning collaboration with Babyface; and "Pilgrim," the hypnotic title track from his recent studio album given a riveting video treatment by director Lili Fini Zanuck. Clapton may still be something of a chameleon (as always, his appearance changes radically from video to video), and he may still be most comfortable simply standing (or sitting) there playing his guitar. But Clapton Chronicles leaves no doubt that he's getting through the video age with his dignity and artistry intact.

There are other Hooker collections available, but Charly was the label that got the really cool stuff together back when hardly anyone realized what truly cool music sounded like (it was the age of disco when 'the most popular music' totally [stunk]). Anyhow, this collection has a mix of well known and obscure tunes, all of which are classic rock archetypes.

U2, Bruce Springsteen, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, and just about anyone who ever did blues-based rock paid tribute to John Lee Hooker at some point. Like all great blues, this stuff is really easy to play, but extremely hard to play really well.

Originally released on Impulse in 1965, "It Serves You Right to Suffer" may not contain John Lee Hooker's better-known material, but it does serve up eight tracks of topnotch blues, complete with the boogie groove that Hooker does so well. The digital remastering for this CD is a blessing; the recording sounds almost as clean as one made today. That prevents the listener from being distracted from this album's many delights: the uptempo, low-key "Shake It Baby"; the relaxed but rhythmically tight "Country Boy"; the danceable "Bottle Up & Go"; and the slow, sexy shuffle of "Sugar Mama." Especially worth hearing, however, is the title track, which strikes a perfect tension between musicality and mood.
