John Lee Hooker - House Rent Boogie

John Lee Hooker — Autor renovcevic @ 13:31

There were already quite a few CDs' worth of early Hooker sides from the late '40s and early '50s on the market -- such as The Legendary Modern Recordings 1948-1954, the three-CD Alternate Boogie: Early Studio Recordings, 1948-1952, and Graveyard Blues -- prior to the 2001 appearance of this collection. So, is there a point to unearthing yet more tracks from his first years as a recording artist? Yes, actually, although this grab bag of early cuts, together with half a dozen previously unissued alternate versions, is not as solid or essential a pickup as The Legendary Modern Recordings 1948-1954. There may be no one alive who could ascertain exactly which of these tracks were never reissued prior to this release, or never reissued on CD prior to this release. Basically, however, it's known that several of these cuts (previously released or not) make their first appearance on compact disc here, and on the whole it's devoted to his lesser-known early Modern sides. Hooker was a very consistent artist even at the outset, and the trademarks that make his early recordings so appealing -- the stomping foot, haunted vocals, and spidery guitar work -- are all in force here. Particularly fine is the stomping title cut (an alternate take). Particularly unusual are the previously unissued take of "I'm in the Mood," which has a harmonica overdub, and the presence of sax, piano, and drums on a few numbers; the 1955 singles "Hug and Squeeze" and "I'm Ready" are very good full-band R&B arrangements. Eddie Kirkland (billed as "Little" Eddie Kirkland) appears on second guitar and vocals on a couple of tracks.

John Lee Hooker - The Cream

John Lee Hooker — Autor renovcevic @ 13:23

Joined by a full band that includes two other guitarists (John Garcia, Jr. on lead and Ron Thompson on rhythm), John Lee Hooker is passionately rockin' on this live date (recorded at the Keystone in Palo Alto, CA in 1997). Hooker has always been known for taking quite a few liberties with his material, something that could easily throw some musicians off. Without a doubt, Hooker keeps a sideman on his toes -- and he presents even more of a challenge on stage because there are no second and third takes. But this is a band that, although not in a class with Canned Heat, obviously understands (and even thrives on) his sense of spontaneity, and rises to the occasion on such familiar gems as "One Room Country Shack," "When My First Wife Left Me" and "Tupelo," as well as the invigorating "Boogie On" (one of the many variations of "Boogie Chillen" Hooker has provided over the years). Hooker doesn't do as much improvising as he did when playing unaccompanied at New York's Hunter College the previous year, but he never ceases to be confidently soulful. Although not quite essential, The Cream is an engaging CD that definitely has a lot going for it. Alex Henderson, AMG

John Lee Hooker - Boogie chillun

John Lee Hooker — Autor renovcevic @ 13:18

mp3|320kbps|158mb

From Grove Press Guide to Blues on CD (copied from Amazon.com)

Hooker's old Live at Sugar Hill and Boogie Chillun albums,
both documents of November 1962 solo performances, are back-to-back
with only one track missing (thanks to CD time constraints).
His music is defiantly elemental-mood, tempo, chord sequences (almost none),
and jagged rhythms vary little. Due to his individual touch and naked feeling,
all nineteen selections escape tediousness and preserve the rural blues' aura
of foreboding mystery in an amplified setting. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993

Graveyard Blues Album Notes

Personnel: John Lee Hooker (vocals, guitar), Andrew Dunham (guitar), Eddie Burns (harmonica).

Recorded from 1948-1950 for Sensation Records.

Digitally remastered by Kirk Felton (1992, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley).

Much of Hooker's best-loved work was recorded for independent Chicago labels like Vee-Jay in the '50s and '60s, but the bluesman's long, prolific career began in the late '40s in Detroit. During that time, as chronicled on GRAVEYARD BLUES, Hooker refined the doomy, foot-stomping boogie style that would become his trademark. The Hooker of '49-'50 sounds less tormented, lacking the existential edge of his later recordings. Instead, there's a light-heartedness and almost peppy swing to these tunes. Hooker's voice is a touch higher and less throaty, but his guitar is cutting, and he'd already mastered his patented boogie beat. Hooker achieved no small amount of success with his recordings from this era, including one of his most famous songs, "Boogie Chillen," heard here in an alternate version. GRAVEYARD BLUES offers a glimpse of an important, formative period in Hooker's career.
