“Musselwhite's biting lines, dramatic singing style and overall
colorful stage presence have made him a star among fans who flocked to
him in the '60s and '70s. Half of these 14 songs were included on
Takin' My Time with the rest taken from Goin' Back Down South. Both are
excellent sets. The former includes sparkling guitar support from
Robben Ford while the latter boasts the always formidable piano of
Lafayette Leake. Musselwhite covers anthems from Little Walter, Willie
Dixon, and Johnny Young, but he also does several originals, among them
'Up and Down the Avenue,' 'On the Spot Boogie,' and 'Highway Blues.'
His voice has deepened some since the early '70s when these were
recorded, but his booming harmonica licks are still easily

RICHIE HAVENS - Nobody Left To Crown (2008)
Richie Havens is an American folk singer and guitarist. Havens is
perhaps best known for his intense rhythmic guitar style, soulful
covers of pop and folk songs and his opening performance at the
Woodstock Festival. Gifted with one of the most recognizable voices in
popular music, Richie Havens has a soulful singing style that remains
as unique and ageless as when he first emerged from the Greenwich
Village folk scene in the early 1960s. It's a voice that has inspired
and electrified audiences from the Woodstock Music & Arts Fair in
1969, to the Clinton Presidential Inauguration in 1993 - coming full
circle with the 30th Woodstock Anniversary celebration, "A Day In The
Garden", in 1999. Richie Havens is not a man to easily abandon his
hopes for a better world. "We are at the dawn of major change", he
declares with a broad smile. Nobody Left to Crown is his heartfelt and

RY COODER - I, Flathead (2008)
If guitarist Ry Cooder's best albums are movie
scores, including the folk-culture clash of 1985's Alamo Bay and the
purple-prairie atmospheres of 1989's Paris, Texas. So it makes sense
that, offscreen, he writes music like a film director. I, Flathead
completes Cooder's trilogy of albums about endangered subcultural
California (following 2005's Chavez Ravine and 2007's My Name Is
Buddy), and a deluxe edition of this CD comes with a novella. You will
need it to fully grasp the concept — Cooder plays a fictional race-car
driver and struggling country singer, Kash Buk — but it is easy to
enjoy the songs as individual scenes, by turns sultry (the
mariachi-R&B opener "Drive Like I Never Been Hurt"), comic (the
Western-swing gag "Spayed Kooley") and romantic (the cantina-band
yearning of "Filipino Dance Hall Girl"). Cooder sings the album's best
number, "5,000 Country Music Songs," in character, as Buk, but in a way
closer to the 1972 gem "Boomer's Story" — like a guy making slow
headway in an indifferent world, to tart, poignant guitar-playing that
