This is the Mayall band of the Mick
Taylor era, with one or two personnel changes between the tracks
(mainly of bassplayer!). Mayall used to record all his gigs on a 2
track reel to reel tape recorder, so don't expect 2008 sound quality!
However, the music more than makes up for the poor sound, with some
long tracks which allow them to stretch out on fine solos, particularly
from Mick Taylor and Dick Heckstall-Smith. Taylor
really impresses here, showing a maturity far beyond his tender years
(he was 18 when most of it was recorded!). Much of what is on here was
never recorded in a studio, and Mayall had a habit of almost pulling
songs out of a hat at gigs, so the chances are that 1 or 2 of these
were only ever played once! Those of you who have the 2 Diary of a Band
albums will find nothing new here, and in truth it is really for Mayall
collectors.
