Elmore James - Shake Your Moneymaker

Elmore James — Autor renovcevic @ 13:15

Classic is a word tossed around so frequently and carelessly these days it's hard to recall the time when it accurately described truly stellar songs. Well, this compilation of 16 sides by Chicago slide-guitar master Elmore James, recorded in New Orleans, Chicago, and New York City between 1959 and 1961, includes real, honest-to-god classics such as "The Sky Is Crying," "Done Somebody Wrong," "Shake Your Moneymaker," and "Look Up Yonder Wall." James's grainy vocals and stinging guitar powerfully express pain and regret. His recording studio band, Broomdusters, sometimes with the great drummer Belton Evans present, reveals emphatic feeling in a supporting role. Only "My Bleeding Heart," sullied by noisome horns and a general sluggishness, and "Something Inside Me," on which an unidentified sax player wears out his welcome fast, fail the test of time.

Elmore James/ Jimmy Reed/ Eddie Taylor - Street Talkin' Me

Elmore James — Autor renovcevic @ 12:41

Artist: Elmore James/ Jimmy Reed/ Eddie Taylor
Album:
Street Talkin' Me
Release Date:
1975
Label:
Muse
Bitrate:
256 k/s
File Size:
74 MB

Review:
The Elmore James tunes come from a couple 1957 sessions he did w/ Vee Jay. Yet again this wasn't released until 1975. 4 of the tunes were the A & B sides of 45 singles back in 57 though. The other 3 saw their 1st release on this disc. The sound quality has nothing to do w/the quality of the CD I own. Thats just the way the Vee Jay material sounds from the mid 50's. Yet again I hate to over look commenting on Eddie Taylor. I know it's billed as 'Elmore James/ Jimmy Reed/ Eddie Taylor,' but they just did that because Jimmy Reed was the most famous of the 3 & he just happened to play harmonica on a couple of the Eddie Taylor tunes (the music industry is so shady!)

Track List:
1.: COMING HOME

Earl Hooker - Two Bugs & A Roach

Earl Hooker — Autor renovcevic @ 12:22

Bit rate: 224 Kbps

Rolling Stone (9/20/70, p.37) - "...This is a good, strong album of modern Chicago-styled blues from one of the finest instrumentalists in the idiom..."

Taught slide guitar by Robert Nighthawk, Delta-born Earl Hooker earned his reputation as a stalwart of amplified blues in the 1950s and 1960s. This collection shows sufficient grounds for his place in the sun: Hooker's guitar speaks volumes on both early 1950s recordings and country- and soul-mannered numbers cut shortly before his death in 1970. The stunner is "Sweet Black Angel," in which the young man's suspended-in-air notes-Azrael hovering-delineate a sepulchral, frightful mood. As a singer Hooker always had a tough time depicting any particular state of feeling at all. - Frank John Hadley, 1993

For a compact disc reissue of Earl Hooker's debut, Arhoolie added some tracks to the original lineup, making for a much more varied package. In addition to the contents of Two Bugs and a Roach (itself a varied lot, with vocals from Hooker, Andrew Odom and Carey Bell in between the instrumentals, all cut in 1968), there are two tracks from stray sessions in late 1968 and July, 1969, along with four very early sides probably recorded in Memphis in the company of Pinetop Perkins, Willie Nix and an unknown bass player. Of these, "Guitar Rag" is the least together, hampered by a bass player who can't find the changes, but "I'm Going Down the Line" and "Earl's Boogie Woogie" are both top-notch uptempo boogies full of fleet fingered soloing. "Sweet Black Angel" was the A-side of a stray single from the early '50s and appears to be from another session, although it's an excellent example of Hooker playing in the Robert Night Hawk style. All in all, one of the must-haves in this artist's very small discography. - Cub Koda, All Music Guide
