Isaiah Dr. Ross (1925, Tunica, MS - 1993, Flint, MI)
A triple-threat
guitarist, harp blower, and vocalist, Dr. Ross decided to fire his
sidemen and carry on as a one-man band, a tradition that also includes
Joe Hill Louis, Daddy Stovepipe, and Jesse Fuller. Ross' music did not
depend on novelty effect, yet it had a distinctly recognizable sound,
in part because he learned to play his own way and essentially played
everything backwards.
Blind Joe Hill (1941, Pennsylvania - 1999, Los Angeles)
A
good one-man band performer in the tradition of Joe Hill Louis and Dr.
Ross, Blind Joe Hill accompanied his craggy vocals with guitar, bass,
and drums. He was among the last in the tradition, and that adds some
value to his recordings, despite a derivative playing style and erratic
compositional skills.
